Here are 10 storylines to follow at one of the most prestigious high school meets in the country:

Leading the discus-sion

Canyon del Oro senior Turner Washington has been getting closer to the 1987 state record of 212 feet, 11 inches belonging to Tempe’s Dwight Johnson and this could finally be the stage where one of the oldest standards in the Arizona high school record book is taken down.

Washington, a University of Arizona signee, ranks No. 2 nationally this year with his mark of 211-6 from a March 1 dual meet, then followed it Saturday with a 211-1 at the Willie Williams Invitational.

Gabriel Oladipo of Fort Bend Hightower TX is the national leader at 211-7, as he and Washington increased the all-time list to 26 high school athletes who have surpassed 211 feet.

Washington won last year’s competition with a meet-record 191-2, eclipsing Johnson’s 1988 standard of 187-9.

Long distance, quick reunion

Brie Oakley of Grandview CO and Allie Schadler of Rio Rico AZ raced March 12 in the 2-mile final at New Balance Nationals Indoor in New York, in addition to Oakley competing March 10 in the 5,000-meter championship.

They will headline an exceptional Sally Meyerhoff mile field, looking to break the 2015 meet record 4:46.17 – 4:44.46 for 1,600 meters – of former Desert Vista AZ star Dani Jones, who recently captured NCAA Indoor titles for Colorado in the 3,000 and distance medley relay.

Oakley, who won both national indoor titles, has an indoor personal-best 4:48.53 in the 1,600 from Feb. 18 at the Simplot Games and her outdoor best is 4:58.47 from last year.

Schadler has a mile personal-best 4:49.45.

Also scheduled to compete are Colorado stars Quinn McConnell of Peak to Peak and Maria Mettler of Air Academy, along with Long Beach Poly CA standout Melissa Tanaka, in addition to Desert Vista talents Baylee Jones, Amanda Davis and Haley Wolf, along with Sandra Day O’Connor junior Jesselyn Bries and Chandler sophomore Morgan Foster.

Twice the Texas talent

Daniel Bernal of El Paso Eastwood TX has enjoyed some of his most impressive career races in Arizona, winning back-to-back cross country titles at the Desert Twilight Festival in Casa Grande, along with capturing the 3,200 championship at last season’s meet.

Bernal has decided to focus on the mile at this year’s event and will receive a strong challenge from Brian Lujan of El Paso Americas.

Since neither athlete has eclipsed 4:15.0 in the 1,600, the mile meet record of 4:08.0 by Cerake Geberkidane of Denver East CO is likely out of reach. Lujan placed second last year in 4:17.07 behind Logan MacKay of Davis UT in 4:16.65.

Triple threat in triple jump

Three states, three elite athletes, three of the top returning marks in the country in the girls triple jump make the competition one of the deepest in meet history.

Agoura CA senior Tara Davis, who boasts an outdoor personal-best 43-2, will look to soar past the 2011 meet record of 41-5 belonging to former Chandler and University of Oregon star Jasmine Todd.

Last year’s competition featured an impressive showdown involving Mountain Pointe AZ standout Nura Muhammad, who prevailed with a personal-best mark of 41 feet, and runner-up Arielle Mack of El Paso Burges TX with a school-record 40-1.25.

Jasmine Moore of Mansfield Lake Ridge TX is the national outdoor leader at 41-11, with 10 athletes already surpassing 40 feet.

Davis, who boasts the best mark in the country in the outdoor long jump at 21-1 after setting the national indoor record 21-11 on Feb. 11 at the Dunamis Sports Group Prep Classic in Texas, is looking to become the first female athlete since Todd in 2012 to sweep long jump and triple jump titles at the meet.

Davis is also the favorite in the 100 hurdles and will square off against California rival Breanna Bernard-Joseph of Roosevelt, looking to challenge the meet record 13.66 set in 2014 by current USC redshirt sophomore Dior Hall of George Washington CO.

Shot put showdown shaping up

The boys shot put meet record of 60-9 by Tomas Navarro of Highland AZ has stood since 2003, but it could be eclipsed by as many as three individuals in Saturday’s final.

Desert Edge junior Tyson Jones, Canyon del Oro senior Turner Washington and Desert Vista senior Elijah Mason all rank in the top 10 nationally this year and are all within reach of the Arizona high school record of 69-3 by Dallas Long of North High, which has stood since 1958, the oldest mark in the state.

Jones has a personal-best 64-11.5, Washington is at 64-10.5 and Mason won the Simplot Games title Feb. 18 with an indoor personal-best 63-2.

Middle distance masterpiece

Chandler sophomore Morgan Foster was the fastest freshman in the country last year in the 800 meters with her 2:07.06 from the Portland Track Festival and Centennial NV senior Karina Haymore ran her personal-best 2:08.55 at the Great Southwest Classic, creating a marquee matchup that could challenge the 2015 meet record of 2:11.42 by former Desert Vista star and Colorado sophomore Dani Jones.

Foster is also scheduled to run the mile, with Haymore also competing on Centennial relays, forcing them both to dig deep in order to take down Jones’ mark.

Grandview CO senior Brie Oakley, who is also running the mile, is entered in the 800 with a personal-best 2:22.74 and could be a wild card in the race, along with Desert Vista’s Baylee Jones and Amanda Davis, as well as Peak to Peak CO sophomore Quinn McConnell.

Moulton making case for sprint sweep

North Canyon AZ junior Tyrees Moulton struggled at last year’s meet, placing 13th in the 200 meters in 22.69 and 10th in the 400 in 50.00.

But this season, Moulton is one of the most improved sprinters in the country, with personal bests of 21.36 in the 200 and 47.66 in the 400, putting him in position to challenge for victories in both events.

In the 200, Moulton will square off with Roosevelt CA senior Roshard Williams, who placed third at last year’s meet and is also the favorite in the 100.

El Paso Franklin TX senior Gabriel Navarro should provide a significant challenge to Moulton in the 400 after taking runner-up last season.

Conlon closing in on another record

Mountain Pointe AZ senior Kayleigh Conlon swept the shot put and discus throw at last year’s meet and is a significant favorite to repeat the feat this season.

Conlon set the meet record with a personal-best 45-8 shot put last year and could take down another impressive standard Saturday in the discus.

Stanford senior Valarie Allman, a Silver Creek CO graduate, set the discus record 144-10 in 2012.

Conlon improved her personal best to 150-2 on March 10 at the Brophy Prep AMDG Invitational, which ranks No. 6 in the country. She also ranks 12th nationally this season with a 44-4 shot put.

Approaching rarefied air

The 2008 boys triple jump competition produced three marks beyond 48 feet, including the top two in meet history, with former Chandler and Texas Tech standout Bryce Lamb reaching 50 feet to edge former Mountain Pointe and Florida star Will Claye at 49-11.

Centennial NV senior James Johnson and Chandler senior Imani Lee could both challenge the meet record with the right conditions, in addition to El Paso Franklin TX junior Emmanuel Oyetunde possibly surpassing 48 feet.

Johnson jumped a personal-best 49-3.5 on March 11 at the Heitkotter Invitational, with Lee winning last year’s Arizona Division 1 state title with a mark of 48-6.5.

Relay records on alert

Centennial NV set the girls distance medley relay record last year by clocking 12:28.31 and produced the No. 2 mark in meet history in the 4x800 relay by clocking 9:30.78, trailing only Long Beach Poly’s 2012 standard of 9:26.18.

Depending on if Karina Haymore, Alexis Gourrier and Kayla Roberts all compete for Centennial, both records could fall, with several other challengers like Desert Vista, Chandler, Mountain Vista CO, Long Beach Poly and North Canyon also with the potential for record runs.

There will also be new relay standards created with the addition of the 4x200, 800 sprint medley and 4x1600 relays to Friday’s schedule.
