Here are 10 storylines to keep an eye on at one of the most prestigious high school meets in the country:

No heptathlon, still plenty of Anna Hall

It’s a schedule only Anna Hall would attempt to put together, showcasing the versatility of the best all-around prep female athlete in the country.

Hall, a Valor Christian CO senior, is the national high school record holder in both the outdoor heptathlon and indoor pentathlon, and she’ll get an opportunity to run, jump and throw Saturday to celebrate her 18th birthday.

Hall, a Georgia signee, is entered in the 300-meter hurdles, high jump and javelin throw, looking to eclipse a pair of meet records and produce a personal best in the latter.

Hall boasts a personal-best 6-foot clearance (1.83m) in the high jump, giving her a legitimate opportunity to eclipse the 1995 record of 5-10.25 (1.78m) held by Jeanna McDowell of Highland, Ariz.

She ran a personal-best 40.76 in the 300 hurdles at last year’s Colorado 4A state prelims and has her sights set on the 2016 meet record of 42.02 set by Elsja Mecham of Summit Academy, Utah.

Hall will be challenged by Ma’Kayla Dickerson of Betty H. Fairfax, who set the Arizona state record by running 41.72 at last year’s Division 2 finals, along with Calabasas senior Kyla Robinson-Hubbard, the California state runner-up last season who boasts a personal-best 41.82.

Although Hall boasts a personal-best 117-11 (35.96m) in the javelin, if her improvement in the shot put during the indoor season is any indication, she should surpass that mark by a significant margin squaring off against several talented competitors from Arizona.

Casteel senior Tyla Biggs, Valley Christian senior Chloe Fraley, Cesar Chavez sophomore Uzuri Graves, Queen Creek senior Mia Rasmussen and Socorro NM senior Ashlyn Aguilar are all capable of challenging the 2017 meet record of 132-6 (40.38m) set by former Chaparral AZ standout Maja Ahmann.

Taking pole vault to the Max

Only one boys pole vaulter in meet history has cleared 17 feet (5.18m), but Monarch CO senior Max Manson has an opportunity to elevate the record to new heights Saturday.

Manson, a Stanford signee, won the New Balance Nationals Indoor title March 10 with a personal-best 17-5.50 (5.32m) clearance. He captured the Colorado 5A outdoor championship last year with a 17-3.50 (5.27m) clearance.

Either of those marks would surpass the meet record of 17 feet set in 2013 by former Desert Vista AZ talent Scott Marshall.

Manson opened his outdoor season Saturday with a 16-6 (5.02m) effort at the Coyote Warrior Invitational.

The highest clearance achieved by any prep vaulter within state boundaries is 17-7 (5.35m) by Valley Vista graduate Cole Riddle at the 2017 Arizona Meet of Champions.

Ramirez ready to rule the ring

West Ranch CA senior Natalie Ramirez is making her debut at the event, but she could produce the most prolific throwing double in meet history Saturday.

Ramirez produced a personal-best 163-2 (49.73m) in the discus throw Thursday, which ranks No. 3 in the country this season. The UCLA commit also boasts a personal-best 47 feet (14.32m) in the shot put, which has her ranked No. 2 nationally this year.

Mountain Pointe AZ graduate Kayleigh Conlon set the meet records in both events in 2017, throwing the discus 150-7 (45.89m) and the shot put 45-8 (13.91m).

Ramirez will be challenged by Roosevelt CA senior Lydia Liu, along with Chandler standouts Ciera Jackson and Makayla Hunter.

Dynamic boys distance battles

Four states will be well represented in the elite boys distance races Saturday, first in the Sally Meyerhoff mile, then the 3,200 meters.

Valor Christian junior Cole Sprout, the runner-up in the New Balance Nationals Indoor mile March 10 by clocking 4:06.68 at The Armory in New York, has the potential to challenge the 2014 meet record of 4:08.0 held by former Denver East CO star Cerake Geberkidane. The 1,600 split for Geberkidane was 4:06.56.

Sprout is expected to be tested by West Ranch seniors Evan BatesIsaiah Seidman and Alexis Romero, along with Campo Verde AZ senior Rylan Stubbs, Gunnison CO senior Colton Stice, Page AZ senior Bowen Martin and Desert Vista AZ senior Lee Nasewytewa.

Geberkidane also boasts the 3,200 meet record at 9:02.69, a mark that could be challenged by Kirtland Central NM senior Kashon Harrison and Highland AZ junior Leo Daschbach, as well as Bates, Seidman and Stubbs.

The magic of Morgan Foster

The last time a female athlete swept both the 800 meters and Sally Meyerhoff mile in the same year was Desert Vista star Dani Jones, producing meet records in both events in 2015 by clocking 2:11.42 and 4:46.17, including a 1,600 split of 4:44.46.

Chandler senior Morgan Foster has the opportunity to duplicate the achievement Saturday, looking to win the mile for the first time at the annual meet, in addition to repeating in the 800.

Foster lowered her own Arizona state outdoor 800 record March 7 by clocking a nation-leading 2:06.13. She also ran a personal-best 10:34.83 in the 3,200 meters March 2.

Foster, a Stanford signee, will be challenged in the 800 by North Canyon junior Dominique Mustin, who ran a personal-best 2:09.64 on March 1.

Following a personal-best 4:50.13 to win the mile Jan. 26 at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix in Boston, Foster looks to improve on her fastest outdoor mile performance of 4:55.17 from 2017.

Foster will be challenged by an impressive field in the Sally Meyerhoff mile, with seven other athletes boasting sub-5 credentials, featuring Peak to Peak CO senior Quinn McConnell, Rio Rico AZ senior Samantha Schadler, Chaparral AZ senior Abi Archer, Air Academy CO junior Tatum Miller and West Ranch teammates Alexis Fernandez and Sophia Hoelzel.

Archer, Fernandez, Hoelzel and Miller are scheduled to double in the 3,200, a field that also includes Flagstaff AZ junior Hana Hall, Deer Valley AZ senior Emily Stutesman and Regis Jesuit CO junior Isalina Colsman.

Roosevelt looks to remain on top

There have been several impressive performances by Roosevelt CA in recent years during its annual trip to Arizona, but the Mustangs often save their best for last each meet with their success in the boys 4x400-meter relay.

Roosevelt has won the boys 4x400 the past two seasons and has three victories in four years, only interrupted by El Paso Franklin TX in 2016. The Mustangs produced the meet record of 3:18.12 in 2015 and have finished no worse than third in each of the past five years.

The path to a potential third straight victory will be a challenging one for Roosevelt’s Joshua Wilcox, Jaylend HowardPatrick Effiom and Jalen Johnson, with Trabuco Hills CA, Rio Rancho NM and host Chandler all fielding impressive lineups.

Chandler is attempting to become the first Arizona program to win the boys 4x400 since 2013, when a Brophy Prep lineup featuring Devon Allen and Robert Grant secured the victory.

Star-studded girls sprint showcase

Whether it’s the girls 200 meters or the 4x100- or 4x400-meter relays, bragging rights will be at stake Saturday involving North Canyon AZ, Chandler AZ and Calabasas CA, three of the elite sprint corps in the country.

The most anticipated showdown is expected to be in the 200, with Calabasas senior De’Anna Nowling squaring off against North Canyon junior Jadyn Mays, both looking to challenge the 2013 meet record of 23.64 established by Chandler standout Ky Westbrook.

Calabasas is also scheduled to face Chandler in the 4x100 relay, both lineups looking to run under 47 seconds for the first time this season. Calabasas sophomore Bella Witt, who is scheduled to compete on the relay, will also face a significant challenge in the 100-meter hurdles against Queen Creek AZ senior Myreanna Bebe, as well as St. Anthony CA sophomore Asjah Atkinson.

After Chandler regained the Arizona preo record in the 4x400 relay March 7 by running 3:43.50, North Canyon, which clocked 3:46.08 at last year’s Division 2 state final, will look to put forth its best lineup in pursuit of defeating the host Wolves for the second year in a row on their home track.

Both Brooks hope for hurdling heroics

After Westwood AZ standout James Smith swept both boys hurdling events last year, clocking 14.23 in the 110 hurdles and 36.58 in the 300 hurdles, another name could highlight both races Saturday.

Chandler senior DeCarlos Brooks, a Cal football signee, boasts the top entry time in the 110 hurdles at 14.36, with Brophy Prep senior Elisha Brooks leading all qualifiers in the 300 hurdles at 37.45, which remains the Arizona sophomore record from 2017.

DeCarlos Brooks will face challenges from fellow Arizona seniors Koa Tuipala of Desert Ridge and Logan Taylor of Maricopa.

Elisha Brooks is expected to be tested by Desert Vista senior Ethan Wright and Valor Christian senior Dane Palazzo.

Williams’ will on display

Grandview CO junior Lily Williams finished third last year in 55.63 in the fastest girls 400-meter race in meet history, with Bishop O’Dowd CA star Tierra Robinson-Jones setting the record at 54.11 and Hamilton AZ standout Morgan Parzych producing the No. 3 all-time mark at 54.99.

Williams, who elevated to No. 5 in meet history last season, concluded the year by winning the Colorado state 5A title in a personal-best 53.85.

She won the Simplot Games indoor 400 title Feb. 16 in 56.46 and could become the first Colorado athlete in meet history to run under 55 seconds, if not challenge Robinson-Jones’ record.

Williams, who is also scheduled to run Friday on Grandview’s 800-meter sprint medley relay, is expected to square off in the 400 against Highlands Ranch CO junior Bryce Johansen, Maryvale AZ senior Mawata Lucky Demaih, Desert Vista senior Reina Ferra, North Canyon junior Jayde Charlton and Chandler freshmen Trinity Henderson and Jocelyn Johnson.

Starkey seeks pole vault stardom

Casteel AZ junior Taylor Starkey held her own Feb. 9 competing unattached indoors against a field of collegiate and professional pole vaulters at the Don Kirby Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M., clearing a personal-best 13-2.50 (4.03m).

Starkey looks to duplicate that performance by clearing 13 feet outdoors for the first time in her career Saturday.

Desert Vista vaulters Shaylah Simpson (2010) and Vanessa Davis (2014) share the meet record, both clearing 13 feet (3.96m).

Starkey’s outdoor-best clearance is 12-8 (3.86m) from last season.

Desert Vista senior Sevanna Hanson has won the past two seasons, including last year’s event with a 12-6 (3.81m) clearance. Hanson boasts a personal-best 12-9 (3.88m).
